Nutanix High Availability and Continuity – Impact on Ops

One of the added benefits of scale-out storage is the addition of multiple storage controllers. When you have more than 2 storage controllers and you lose one due to failure or maintenance like a rolling upgrade, you can do so with minimal impact.

Below are the results of 8-node cluster with 700 desktops running a Login VSI medium workload. One of the 8 storage controllers is shutdown to see the impact on the cluster. No desktops were rebooted or shutdown. IOPS dropped from 2,000 to 1,496 and latency had a brief spike from 4ms to 22.37 ms.

Things to think about for hyper-convergence?

* Is data spread out evenly that additional controllers will help?
* Do you have to vMotion VM’s to preform an upgrade? If so, can you meet your maintenance window?
* Will dependences on the Hypervisor management stack cause you to patch both your control and data plane?

Nutanix on Scaling Horizon Mirage

Nutanix was the first vendor to release a VMware Horizon Reference Architecture (RA) laying out the suite on one Nutanix Block, including Horizon Data and providing load test data in the RA. There was one piece that was left out, Horizon Mirage. Horizon Mirage today was built for physical PC’s but some people in the community have already talked about how to make it work with Horizon View, including VMware employees. Mirage can be used to help manage Branch Office Desktops(BOD) utilizing VDI and Nutanix has a co-authored solution for BOD with VMware but this post is focusing on Mirage with Physical PC’s

#EUC Tip 79: SAML Sanity Check, help for dealing with SaaS Apps + Horizon Application Manager

Horizon Application Manager today gives you the ability to offer a portal to your end-users for SaaS(Software as a Service) applications like Salesfore.com and your ThinApp packages. Horizon has some SaaS applications partially per-configured. Most of the time all you have to do is take your SAML certificate from Horizon and upload it your SaaS App and on the SaaS configure the identity providers. Despite this “easy process” errors can occur. Most error messages that occur aren’t very helpful at getting your problem solved.
