Hyper-V and VDI on Nutanix: Part 2 – VM Deployment

Part 1 was about setting up the connection broker and applying the roles needed for a basic deployment. Part 2 will focus on deploying desktops from a golden image.

New update – July 15, 2016 – You will need to get into each host an run “Set-StorageSetting -NewDiskPolicy OnlineAll” It’s best to log a call into support as there are some caveats around disk replacement when the setting is used.

First thing we need to do is allow our Nutanix storage to be seen by the Remote Connection Broker(RCB). From the Nutanix UI we need to add IP whitelist. Our Connection Broker is using the IP of 10.20.0.126/255.255.255.0

A part of the Nutanix Hyper-V install we prompt the user for a single entry (nutanix-) in their AD-DNS. This allows the SMB 3.0 to be share available for services like the Remote Connection Broker and backup.

Like VMware View you need a location to place your virtual desktops in Active Directory. Go to task and edit the deployment settings.

You can pick a location from the drop down or manually enter one. If you create a new location Microsoft has given you a powershell script to generate the proper security permissions.

Ran the script on one of the Domain Controllers and all systems go!

Instead of calling the grouping of desktops pool, Microsoft calls them collections. Go to tasks and start your deploying.

Pooled = persistent , If your wanting to deploying applications with SCCM I would suggest using our inline dedupe so you can manage your applications the same why for both virtual and physical desktops.

So I have been trying to get the RDS VDI Pool creation working on a cluster of Nutanix hardware and it has stalled at the pool creation stage. Once I go to select a template I get the error “Could not retrieve the virtual desktop template details for “.

The template was created from hyperV snapin, loading windows 10 from ISO (tried on on windows 8 and got the same error). Nothing else installed: sysprep /generalize /oobe /mode:vm /shutdown

If I use a template from other storage it gets through the wizard, but fails to create the VMs and I end up with a collection of 0 VMs. While creating the VMs I get this error: The device is not ready. (Exception from HRESULT:0x80070015)

      Hi Matt

where is the template being stored? on SCVMM? Did you add the whitelist?

      • Matt Thiessen says:

The template is on the same storage as where I am creating the VDI desktops. At this point SCVMM is no longer in the picture, just using hyperV manager to perform tasks. Template machine was created from the hyperV manager and put into the cluster storage.

Currently the entire server subnet is on the whitelist just to make sure everything can access it, and I can browse the storage using File Explorer to go to the UNC path.

i don’t have a running hyper-v environment so I would just lob a call into support. I assume you have the External VIP running because this apart of the install/setup.

  2. Anyone seeing this error when setting up the User Profile location to the Nutanix SMB share?

Could not create the template VHD. Error Message: The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA).
