DR in Box with Zerto

6844

When Nutanix launched the NX-3000 Series Hardware and NOS 3.0, replication was a major feature. I wrote about some of the capabilities in this article. The article also mentions some third party vendors that you can use to replicate your data from one site to another. When talking with customers I have been recommending Zerto as a great option to move data between different storage vendors. While our replication is great we do require both ends of the link to have Nutanix nodes running.

I believe Zerto to be the most similar to what Nutanix has to offer with our Native replication. Nutanix and Zerto are similar in the following ways:

1. Scalable to thousands of VM’s. Both architectures are distributed so replication doesn’t become a bottleneck
2. Integrated with vCenter. Both products have features that make VMware SRM redundant.

3. Per VM recovery. You don’t have to worry about replicating your LUN or gaint volumes. Pick the VM you want to go and your off to the races.

4. Point-in-time Recovery. With Zerto’s Journaling, you can pick any point in time to recover from. Nutanix allows for the same based on the replication schedule you selected for the remote side.
5. VM-level consistency groups.
6. Replication can be bi-directional
7. Automated failover and failback
8. Define the Max Bandwidth

Some extra places where Zerto shines
1. For a software solution they have rapid deployment built-in. Everything is taken care for you, even DRS rules and maintenance mode. It’s really slick.

2. Built in WAN compression and acceleration
3. Protection for vApps natively
4. vCloud Integration
5. Tons of reports
6. Masking. The ability to hide information from being visible from the remote site. Instead of the remote site being able to see a specific ESX/ESXi IP address and its datastores and NICs. Very handy in larger deployments.

Nutanix can provide a quick easy solution to get your DR project off the ground and lots of space with 20 TB Raw in one block plus compression. Zerto can allow you to reuse your existing investments while making DR easy.
