Tip 41: Treat Your VDI Like A Produce Isle

You should also keep your VDI environment clean by refreshing or recomposing your desktops. If you’re using view composer and linked clones your virtual desktops won’t take up much space and you can redirect your IO to tiered storage. Sounds great right?

I think most people know that recomposing or refreshing will reclaim any space savings that you may have lost with the daily growth of the linked clones. I don’t want to spend too much time on the linked clone architecture since you can get all that information here:

What I do want to point out is that all the writes are misaligned. After meeting our NetApp rep we got talking about the server side of the house and misalignment. This is what he had to say:

“The problem is the Delta disks use a grain size of 512 bytes. That means we don’t know by how much they will be misaligned, plus it could changed based on the IO the VM is doing. At this point there is no way to avoid the delta misalignment. All you can is mange it”

This was news to me and I thought I would pass it along to the masses.
